Eddie (not Edie, definitely not!) was a relatable protagonist, from her unconventional ways mixed with her love of reading and dreams of authorship to just everything about how daft she can be at times, her flaws drive the plot of most of the book. Lex Croucher’s writing style was just enticing and utterly captivating, so much so that I was invested right from the opening line in Chapter One. I was 75 pages and eight chapters into the book before I came up for air the first time. This is the first of Croucher’s works that I’d read, although I’d also heard plenty of positive things about Reputation. It’s unusual for me, but I’d heard generally positive things about Infamous from content creators I follow online, so decided to give it a try. I don’t read that many romance novels, besides the week in August 2022 when I read the entire Bridgerton series, but that’s beside the point. What I need is a book so vivid and catching that I can finish it in a day. It also means that the backlog of books to be read in historical fiction is immense. In fact, it’s the most-read genre of both fiction and non-fiction from 2022 according to TheStoryGraph.
